In the first-ever outdoor game for either franchise, captain Matt Ellis scored the game-winning goal in the sixth round of the shootout as the Rochester Americans froze the Lake Erie Monsters with a historic 5-4 victory under the stars Friday night in front of 11,015 fans at Frontier Field in the kickoff to the Greater Area Rochester Honda Dealers Frozen Frontier presented by Labatt.

Ellis and Jerome Gauthier-Leduc both finished with a goal and an assist to lead the Amerks, while Colton Gillies and Phil Varone also scored goals to round out the scoring. Joel Armia added two assists, and Matt Hackett earned his seventh win of the season with 26 saves.

Matt Hunwick scored two goals for Lake Erie, while Mark Olver finished with a goal and two assists and Andrew Agozzino tallied three assists. Garrett Meurs also scored in the loss for the Monsters and Calvin Pickard turned aside 25 shots.

In Sunday’s Rochester Americans vs. Buffalo Sabres Alumni Game at the Greater Rochester Area Honda Dealers Frozen Frontier presented by Labatt, the former Amerks held on to beat the Sabres 5-3 outside in the snow at Frontier Field.

Former Amerks Chris Palmer and Paul Brydges each scored two goals, and former Amerk head coach Randy Cunneyworth added a goal. Scoring for the Sabres alumni was Danny Gare, Andrew Peters, and Rob Ray. Tom Askey and Kenton Rein split time in between the pipes for the Amerks alumni, while the recently retired former Sabre and Amerk Martin Biron manned the net for the Buffalo squad.

Prior to the game, Sabres and Amerks alumni alike met in the left field concourse for a Meet & Greet with the fans. As the players made their way out to the ice for warm-ups, they were introduced by long-time Buffalo Sabres broadcaster Rick Jeanneret, while Amerks Hall of Fame broadcaster Don Stevens provided in-game interviews.
